Golf weekend for beginners: how to plan your first trip
A good first golf weekend doesn't need a famous course or perfect technique. It needs three things: a facility where you're allowed to play even without a handicap certificate, enough time between the activities – and a region with a second course nearby, in case the first round leaves you wanting more. If the two of you are travelling together and one of you has never held a club, plan fewer holes and more breaks. The trip is meant to be fun, not an exam.
Which course is right for you if you don't (yet) have a handicap certificate?
Without a handicap certificate you're not excluded – you simply choose different facilities. Open to you:
In the GolfRanger directory you can filter directly for “Playable without handicap certificate”. That saves you the endless phone calls – and the disappointment when the club office still asks for proof on a Friday afternoon.
If you want to solve this for good: you can also earn your handicap certificate on holiday. Packages with accommodation start at around 890 €, courses alone in holiday regions at about 530 € (source: golfandtravel.eu, as of August 2026). That's an option for a long weekend where the course is the main focus – not for a trip where you also want to look around the area on the side.
What a good schedule looks like
Friday – journey and arrival Travel so that you arrive in the afternoon. Then either 9 holes on a short course or an hour at the driving range. Either one is plenty. Anyone aiming straight for 18 holes after four hours in the car will play the last six of them in a bad mood. Afterwards, eat in peace and go to bed early.
Saturday – the main round day 18 holes, ideally with a tee time in the morning. As beginners, allow plenty of time and let faster flights play through – that's normal, everyone does it at some point, and it takes the pressure off you. In the afternoon: feet up. If you still have energy, head to the putting green. At the start that gets you further than more balls on the range.
Sunday – short and relaxed 9 holes in the morning, then the journey home. Nine holes are the ideal finish: you notice what has changed since Friday and you're still in the car by midday.
For this schedule, choose a region with at least two courses. That way you won't play the same holes on Saturday and Sunday, and you have a fallback if a course is closed for a tournament.
What does a golf weekend cost?
For reference: the average green fee in Germany is 64 € on weekdays and 74 € on weekends for 18 holes (source: golfsportmagazin.de, as of August 2026).
That gives you something to calculate with. A couples' weekend typically consists of:
So the green fee is rarely the biggest item – but it's the one you control most easily by consciously choosing your playing days and the type of course.
Packing list and practical tips
Conclusion
A first golf weekend works best with little on the programme, a suitable facility and a region with a second course within reach. On the GolfRanger golf regions pages, pick an area with several facilities and set the filter “Playable without handicap certificate” in the directory. That's the two most important decisions made in five minutes – the rest is up to the course.
