Golf without a course certificate: courses you can play right away

Guide1 September 2026

Yes, you can play golf before you have your course certificate. Many facilities in Germany let you onto the course without proof – you just need to know which ones.

Where you can play without a course certificate

The course certificate is the qualification for playing a golf course on your own. How it works is explained in the guide course certificate. For getting started, you don't need it.

You have three options:

Pay & play courses. Here you pay per round and don't have to be a club member. No application, no annual fee. You arrive, pay, and play. According to vcg.de there are around 400 public courses in Germany that require no membership. Many of them have no course certificate requirement.

Short courses. Shorter holes, a smaller loop, less pressure. Many short courses require no qualification at all.

Club courses with guest rules. Some clubs let guests play without a course certificate too. The requirements vary from course to course. Each course's GolfRanger listing tells you what applies there.

Driving range and short course: a relaxed start

The driving range is the practice area where you hit balls onto an open field. You don't need any qualification there. The same applies to most other practice facilities.

For the first few weeks, the driving range and a short course are all you need. You learn the swing without a group queuing up behind you. And you find out whether this sport is for you – before you put money into formal training.

One advantage many people underestimate: on the range it doesn't matter how far the ball flies. You can hit poor shots without disturbing anyone.

What does it cost?

The green fee is the fee for a round on a course where you are not a member. On average it is around 64 euros on weekdays (golfsportmagazin.de, as of 2026).

On weekends and at some facilities this can differ. The exact prices for short courses, driving range and balls are [check status] – take a look at the respective course listing.

When the course certificate pays off

Sooner or later, your options without a course certificate become limited. Many clubs require it from guests. If you want to play regularly on 18-hole courses, there is hardly any way around it.

The cost is around 150 to 400 euros. The time required ranges from three days to a few weeks (fernmitgliedschaft.de). You can read how it works in detail in the guide course certificate.

Our advice: play a short course and the range a few times first. If you still feel like it after that, sign up for the course.
