Course certificate: What is it, what does it cost, how long does it take?

Guide1 September 2026

The course certificate is your permission to play a golf course on your own. It is also called the driver's license for golf — without it, many facilities won't let you play.

What does the course certificate cost?

Expect around 150 to 400 euros (source: fernmitgliedschaft.de). The range depends mainly on the course format.

A compact group course sits at the lower end. Add many individual lessons with a pro and it gets more expensive.

What exactly is included in the price varies from club to club. Ask before you book: are rental clubs, range balls and the exam fee included [check current status]?

How long does the course take?

Between three days and several weeks. Both lead to the same goal.

Intensive course: three days in a row, often over a weekend. Good if you want to get on the course quickly.

Flexible course: spread over several weeks, usually one or two sessions per week. Good if you want to practice between lessons.

The swing needs repetition. If you don't keep practicing after the intensive course, you quickly lose the feel again.

How the exam works

The exam consists of two parts.

Theory

Around 30 questions on rules and conduct on the course (source: Quellness Golf Resort). It covers etiquette, safety, pitch marks and the most important rules situations.

It is study material, not talent. Anyone who works through the rulebook usually passes this part.

Practice

The practical part takes place on the course. For handicap 54 you need 18 Stableford net points over nine holes (source: Quellness Golf Resort).

Stableford means: you collect points per hole instead of counting strokes. If a hole goes wrong, you pick up your ball and move on.

That is exactly what takes the pressure off. You don't have to play nine holes cleanly — you need enough good holes.

How long is the course certificate valid?

Clubs that recognize the DGV (German Golf Association) course certificate must accept it within two years of passing (source: golf.de / DGV FAQ).

After these two years it is at the discretion of the respective club. Some then ask for current playing experience or a trial round [check current status].

In practical terms: if you play regularly and hold a handicap index, this is rarely an issue. If you have taken a five-year break, call the club office first.

Course certificate = handicap 54?

After passing the exam you receive a handicap index of 54.0 (source: DGV service portal). That is the highest index there is — and your starting point.

Roughly speaking, 54.0 means: you get a handicap allowance of three strokes on every hole. From there you work your way down, round by round.

Important for booking tee times: many clubs don't ask for the course certificate but for the handicap index. It is the same thing in different words.

Can you fail?

Yes. And it's no drama.

The exam can be retaken. No club sends you home and locks you out.

Usually it is the practical part that goes wrong when the nerves kick in. Then you practice for another two weeks and go out again.

Whether a retake costs extra is up to each club [check current status]. Ask about it directly when you register.

Playing golf without a course certificate — these courses are open to you anyway

You don't have to wait until the exam is done. Many courses can be played without a course certificate.

The keyword is Pay & Play. You pay a green fee per round and play — no club membership, no joining fee, no annual fee.

For getting started, this is the most relaxed option. You learn how a real round works before you put money into a course.

Tagging along often works too: if you are out with an experienced fellow player, some facilities will let you join them [check current status]. Each club sets its own rules.
