Location and Surroundings
The golf course lies in the middle of the Appenzellerland in the high valley of Gonten, surrounded by gentle hills at 910 m above sea level. Meadows with stretches of woodland and raised bogs frame the facility; on the southern edge, a protected wetland borders the course. From the clubhouse on the gently undulating hill, the view extends across the Appenzeller landscape to the Alpstein massif with the Säntis in the background. From the motorway exit in Gossau or St.Gallen it is a 30-minute drive, and from the Gontenbad stop of the Appenzeller Bahnen it is a 10-minute walk.
The Course
The 18-hole course is rated with a par of 71 and measures 4.234 to 5.334 meters. The design is by John Chilver-Stainer.
The slightly hilly terrain produced a varied 18-hole facility with a par of 71, with rather short, narrow fairways that demand precise play. The eye-catcher is hole 13, a par 5 with an island green, designed by golf course architect John Chilver-Stainer from Brig.
Facilities and Dining
Practice facilities include a driving range and pro shop. Restaurant Golf Gonten, opened in 2012, is run by the Hof Weissbad resort, faces the Säntis with glazing on two sides and offers 120 outdoor seats on the garden terrace extended in 2021.
Guests and Green Fees
The green fee is 105 CHF on weekdays and 125 CHF on weekends. Guests are subject to a handicap limit of 54.
