Tee (Teeing Ground)
The tee is the marked area from which you start each hole.
The tee, in English Teeing Ground, is the defined starting area of every hole. It is bounded by two closing markers and extends two club lengths backwards. Within this rectangle you may place the ball on a tee — the only moment of the round in which that is allowed. Most holes have several tees with different colours. The colours stand for different lengths, from the front red to the rear black or golden markers.
For your round the choice of tee is the first strategic decision. If you play from too far back, the hole becomes longer than your game allows. An example: the white tees are intended for experienced men, yellow for most male club players, red for ladies. Your course handicap is calculated depending on the chosen tee, because every tee has its own course and slope values. That stands on the scorecard. Excessive length costs strokes and time.
Two rules you should know: first, the ball may lie anywhere between the markers within the tee, but not in front of it. Second, a stroke from outside the markers in stroke play is a breach with penalty strokes. If in doubt ask your fellow players before you play. On the golf course search you can see for many facilities which tees and lengths are available.
FAQ
Where exactly may I place my ball on the tee?
Between the two markers and up to two club lengths behind them — that is your allowed area, and it is bigger than many think. Your feet may stand outside in the process; only the ball must lie inside. Use the depth when the front area between the markers is worn down.
May I move the tee markers if they interfere with my stance?
No, the markers are immovable as long as you play from this tee. Whoever moves them incurs penalty strokes. But you may look for a comfortable position within the area — that is what the depth of two club lengths is for.
Which tee colour should I choose as a beginner?
Take the shorter tee, mostly red or a forward tee if the facility offers one. Shorter holes mean less frustration, better results and faster play for everyone. With increasing skill and sinking handicap you then move step by step further back.
