Bag Tag

The bag tag is an attachment on the golf bag that identifies you as a member or guest of a club.

The bag tag is the small plate on the carry handle of your golf bag. It usually shows the club name, the membership number and the year of validity; for guest players often the name of the facility and the date of the paid green fee. Many clubs change the colour or shape of the tag annually so that it is recognisable at a glance who is currently entitled to play. At your home course hardly anyone checks, but on foreign facilities the tag belongs to quiet etiquette: it signals that you are properly registered.

In practice you encounter the bag tag above all when playing golf abroad and on foreign courses. Example: you play as a guest at a facility, pay your green fee in the club office and are handed a day tag. You hang it visibly on your bag before going to the first tee. If a marshal or a ranger comes by, one look at the tag is enough, and you do not have to explain anything. As a member you wear the annual tag of your club — at open competitions the club office often checks it together with your golf ID card.

A common misconception: the bag tag replaces neither the registration nor the proof of a course certificate or handicap. It is only a visible sign, not a playing entitlement in itself. Whoever forgets to attach it risks a friendly but firm query at some facilities. Conversely, many golfers collect bag tags from courses they have played as a memento — the obligatory tag thus becomes a small diary of the rounds played.

FAQ

Where do I get a bag tag as a guest?

As a guest you receive the day tag in the club office of the facility, usually directly when paying your green fee. Hang it visibly on the carry handle of your bag before going to the first tee. As a member you receive the annual tag from your home club, often together with the new season card or after payment of the annual fee.

Does the bag tag replace the registration at the facility?

No, the bag tag is only a visible sign, not a playing entitlement. You still have to register and pay, and you also prove your course certificate or handicap separately if required, for example with the golf ID card. The tag only saves you the discussion when a marshal checks on the course.

What happens if I forget to attach the bag tag?

At most facilities nothing dramatic happens, but you must expect a friendly, firm query. A marshal or ranger can stop you and ask about registration and green fee, which interrupts your round unnecessarily. Therefore hang the tag on the bag right after paying — then you have peace.
