Course Handicap

The course handicap is your personal stroke allowance on a specific course, calculated from handicap index, slope and course rating.

The term describes the conversion of your general playing-strength value to the facility you are currently playing. Your handicap is course-independent, the course handicap is not. A difficult course with a high slope value gives you more strokes than an easy one. The calculation is based on slope and Course Rating of the respective set of tees. In German-speaking countries the term Spielvorgabe (playing handicap) is also common. The key point is: the course handicap applies per course and per tee color, not as a fixed value forever.

In practice you will find the conversion at every facility as a table on the notice board or directly on the scorecard. An example: you play with a handicap index of 18.4 from the yellow tees. The slope is 128, the course rating just above par. From the table you read off: course handicap 21. These 21 strokes are distributed across the 18 holes according to the hole index; on the three hardest holes you get two strokes. In Stableford it is exactly this allowance that counts for your net points.

Typical mistake: going out for the round with your raw handicap index instead of determining your course handicap. Anyone who does that regularly plays with the wrong allowance on unfamiliar courses, sometimes too tough, sometimes too easy. Also popular is comparing your course handicap between different courses as if it were a performance value. It is a calculation figure for one day at one facility, nothing more. The official tables hang at the clubhouse, and many facilities also provide them online.

FAQ

Where do I find my course handicap at an unfamiliar course?

The conversion table hangs at every facility as a notice at the clubhouse and is often printed directly on the scorecard. You look up your handicap index, read off the column for your tee color and you have your course handicap. Many facilities also provide the table online.

Why is my course handicap different on every course?

Your handicap index is course-independent, the course handicap is not. A difficult course with a high slope value gives you more strokes than an easy one, and every tee color is calculated differently. The allowance therefore applies per course and per tee — not as a fixed value forever.

Can I use my course handicap as a performance comparison across courses?

No. The course handicap is a calculation figure for one day at one specific facility, not a performance metric. Comparing it with that of another course makes as little sense as reading the temperatures of two cities as a fitness value. Your comparable value remains the handicap index.
