Eagle

An eagle is two strokes under par on a hole.

The eagle stands one level above the birdie. On a par 5 you need three strokes, on a par 4 two, on a par 3 one. An eagle on a par 3 is at the same time a hole in one. The eagle fits to the logic of the bird names: bigger than the small bird, rarer to see. On the scorecard many golfers mark the result with a double circle.

Most eagles fall on reachable par 5s. Typical pattern: long tee shot onto the fairway, then a wood or long iron onto the green, afterwards a putt from middle distance. Example: par 5 over 450 metres, drive 230 metres, hybrid onto the fringe, chip onto one metre, holed. An eagle on a par 4 arises almost always through a holed approach stroke from 80 to 120 metres. Such moments can hardly be planned, they are often a mixture of good stroke and luck.

Important is the classification in connection with your par. An eagle in the gross result is rare. In the net play with handicap strokes it looks different. Whoever receives two handicap strokes on a par 5 and plays a par has net an eagle. In Stableford that gives four points. Ambitious golfers should nevertheless not force the second stroke onto the green on every par 5. Water, bunkers and dense rough in front of the green punish coming up half a metre short harshly. The alternative is the targeted lay-up onto the desired distance for a safe birdie.

FAQ

On which holes is an eagle realistic for amateurs?

Most likely on short par 5s, when after a good tee shot you reach the green with the second stroke and sink the putt. On par 4s an eagle arises almost only through a holed approach stroke, which is pure chance. So plan your par 5 strategy deliberately instead of hoping for miracles.

Should I always attack the par 5 green in two strokes?

No, forcing it is the classic mistake. If water, deep bunkers or dense rough lie in front of the green, coming up half a metre short often costs more than the eagle brings. The targeted lay-up onto your favourite distance for the safe birdie is statistically the smarter choice.

How many points does an eagle bring in Stableford?

Gross an eagle gives four Stableford points, because you played two under par. Net you can come to five or six points with handicap strokes if your result lies arithmetically below eagle. But a real gross eagle remains for most players a highlight of the season.
