Finish

The finish is the end position of the golf swing in which you swing out after striking the ball.

In the finish you stand balanced on the front foot, the chest points toward the target, the club rests behind the head or at the shoulder. This position is not decoration but the result of a clean swing. Whoever wobbles in the finish or tips backwards has usually already struck the ball wrongly before. Coaches therefore use the finish as a diagnostic tool, because it reveals the entire swing without you having to check every part individually. From the backswing via the impact to the finish everything forms a chain whose last link mirrors the quality of the previous ones.

In practice, consciously holding the finish helps you with almost every shot. An example on the range: you hit five balls with the 7 iron and remain standing in the end position for three seconds after each strike. If you notice that you break to the left or land on the heel, the weight shift toward the target is missing. The exercise forces you into a complete follow-through instead of a chopped strike. Many players notice for the first time in the process how little they actually swing through.

The typical mistake is looking up too early, which destroys the finish before it forms. Whoever watches the ball too early pulls shoulder and head up and twists the clubface. The simple rule is: keep standing until the ball is long since in the air. A held, calm finish is at the same time the visible sign of a controlled swing and gives you confidence on the course, because you feel that the shot was clean.

FAQ

Why should I keep standing in the finish after the shot?

Because the end position tells you whether your swing was clean. If you stand balanced on the front foot, the weight shift was right; if you tip backwards or break out to the side, something is already wrong beforehand. Hold the position for three seconds and you get honest feedback without video analysis.

Does looking up really destroy my shot?

Yes, looking after the ball too early is one of the most common mistakes. If you pull head and shoulder up too soon, the clubface twists at impact and the ball starts offline or thin. The simple rule: keep standing until the ball is long since in the air — the eyes follow the finish, not the other way round.

Can I tell from the finish what is going wrong with my swing?

Often yes, because the finish is the last link of a chain that runs from the backswing to the impact. Coaches read from it whether weight, balance and follow-through fitted, without having to check every detail individually. Whoever wobbles permanently or lands on the heel should have the entire swing looked at.
