Golf instructor

The golf instructor is the trained coach who teaches you the golf swing and the game on the course.

In Germany the golf instructor usually works as a Teaching Pro with association training, employed at a club or working freelance at a golf academy. They teach one-to-one or in golf classes, from taster course to performance training. To be distinguished from this is the Playing Pro, who mainly plays tournaments themselves. For you as a student the Teaching Pro is what counts: their core business is conveying technique, rules and course strategy. Good instructors work with video analysis, launch monitors and simple exercises instead of swing theories.

In practice a lesson often looks like this: the pro films your swing with a 7 iron and notices that you have the ball too far forward in your stance. They give you a simple exercise with a towel behind the ball and have you hit ten balls with a half swing. After a few weeks of practice the correction migrates into your normal game. A good golf instructor rarely changes everything at once but sets one focus per session.

A typical mistake is constantly changing instructors. Every pro has their own focuses and terms, and anyone who starts fresh every few months collects contradictory swing thoughts. Also underestimated: one lesson does not cure a slice; it only shows the way. The improvement happens in the practice between lessons. Stick with an instructor you trust and work through the exercises consistently.

FAQ

How do you recognize a good golf instructor?

A good instructor has association training, works as a Teaching Pro and explains things in simple words instead of swing theories. They set a clear focus per lesson and send you off with a concrete exercise. Video analysis and launch monitors are good tools, but no substitute for understandable guidance.

How often should you take lessons with a golf instructor?

Better rarely and consistently than frequently and aimlessly. One lesson every few weeks with practice scheduled in between brings more than weekly lessons without practice. The improvement does not happen in the lesson itself but in consistently working through the exercises between appointments.

What is the difference between a Teaching Pro and a Playing Pro?

The Teaching Pro is your point of contact as a student, because their core business is teaching technique, rules and course strategy. The Playing Pro, on the other hand, concentrates on their own tournament play and at most teaches on the side. For your lessons, book the Teaching Pro of your club or an academy.
