Hacker

In golf jargon, a hacker is an inexperienced player with a high score.

The term comes from English, where "to hack" means to chop. It evokes the image of the golfer who chops at the ground instead of striking the ball cleanly. Many Divots, topped balls and air shots are part of the cliché. The word is colloquial and slightly mocking, but it often appears self-deprecatingly as well. It plays no role in the rulebook or in official scoring.

In reality every golfer was a hacker at the beginning. An example: your first round after the course certificate ends with 120 strokes, three lost balls and an excursion into the woods. That is normal and no reason for shame. With regular practice on the range and short holes the score comes down by itself. Most golfers stay in the hacker phase by choice for as long as they only play occasionally.

The word turns ugly when it is used as an insult against playing partners. On the course, behavior counts more than the score: replace divots, rake bunkers, keep the pace of play of the group. A polite beginner is preferable to any cursing low-handicapper. Anyone who jokes about hackers should only do so about themselves.

FAQ

Is it bad to be a hacker as a beginner?

No, every golfer was a hacker at the start — that is part of the game. Your first round with 120 strokes and three lost balls after the course certificate is completely normal. With regular practice the score comes down by itself.

How do I get out of the hacker phase?

Practice regularly on the range and play short holes instead of rarely playing full rounds. Short, frequent sessions bring more than a marathon once a month. Anyone who only plays occasionally stays in the hacker phase by choice — and that is fine too, as long as the fun is there.

May I call a playing partner a hacker?

The word is mocking and works well self-deprecatingly, but as an insult directed at playing partners it quickly turns ugly. On the course, behavior counts more than the score: replace divots, rake bunkers and keep the pace of play. Anyone who jokes about hackers should only do so about themselves.
