19th Hole

The 19th hole is the joking name for the clubhouse or the bar where the round winds down.

The 19th hole has nothing to do with fairways and greens. It means the sociable finish after the regular 18 holes: a drink at the bar, a meal in the restaurant, going through the scorecard with your fellow competitors. In the English-speaking world it is called the "19th hole", and in the clubhouse of many facilities the term even hangs above the bar. The tradition belongs to golf culture just like the handshake on the last hole. This is where the best shots of the round are talked through once more and the bad ones are generously forgotten.

In practice, the visit is almost part of the tournament routine. An example: after your round you hand in the signed scorecard at the club office and sit down at a table with your group. That is where you hear the interim standings, discuss the tough holes and wait for the prize-giving. At some facilities there is also a Halfway House out on the course — the small snack stop after nine holes. That is the break during the round, while the 19th hole is the real wind-down afterwards.

A widespread custom at the 19th hole is settling the round's small betting debts. Whoever put a ball in the water, made a three-putt or woke the group with their shot traditionally buys a round of drinks. This is not an official rulebook but living club folklore that varies from facility to facility. There is only one way you should not misunderstand the term: as a genuine golf term it stands firmly in the dictionary, even though you play not a single stroke doing it.

FAQ

Do I have to stop off at the clubhouse after the round?

No, the 19th hole is living club folklore, not an obligation. It refers to the sociable wind-down in the clubhouse — handing in the scorecard, talking about the round with your group, waiting for the prize-giving. Most golfers happily join in, because it belongs to golf culture like the handshake on the last hole.

What is the deal with rounds of drinks at the 19th hole?

Those are the round's small betting debts: whoever put a ball in the water, made a three-putt or woke the group with their shot traditionally buys a round of drinks. This is not an official rulebook but a custom that is interpreted differently from facility to facility.

Is the Halfway House the same as the 19th hole?

No. The Halfway House is the snack stop out on the course after nine holes — the break during the round. The 19th hole, on the other hand, is the real wind-down afterwards, once all 18 holes have been played and the cards handed in.
