Open Tournaments

Open tournaments are competitions that golfers may enter even without membership of the host club.

The counterpart is club-internal competitions, where only the club's own members tee it up. Open tournaments are aimed at guests from other clubs, often from across the whole region or association. The requirement is almost always a maintained Handicap; the exact conditions are set out in the tournament entry form: handicap limit, format, entry fee and the number of starting places. Entries are made via the golf associations' portals or directly with the host club. The entry fee often already includes the green fee for the day.

For you, open tournaments are the easiest way to get to know unfamiliar courses under tournament conditions. An example: you play off handicap 28 and want to test a demanding facility in the neighbouring region. Instead of just playing a casual round as a day visitor, you enter the open Stableford tournament and play with a scorecard, playing partners and the official rules of play — and your result counts towards your handicap. At the same time you meet people from other clubs. Many venues use such tournaments deliberately to raise the profile of their course.

A typical mistake is entering without reading the entry form. Anyone who exceeds the handicap limit or does not know the format will be standing on the tee surprised. Read beforehand whether it is scored by stroke play or Stableford, which tees apply and whether the round counts towards your handicap. And allow time: tournament rounds take longer than a casual round, because every card is scored and the prize-giving has to be waited out.
