PE

PE is the common abbreviation for Platzerlaubnis (course permission) — the official playing eligibility for a golf course.

The Platzerlaubnis (course permission) is the proof that you can play golf and master the rules as well as etiquette. It is the prerequisite for playing a round at most German facilities. It is earned in a course with a golf instructor, which ends with a practical and a theoretical test. In the test, you show reliable shots from the tee, on the fairway and on the green, plus rules and etiquette questions. In the past, the whole thing was called Course Certificate — that term has remained in everyday use to this day.

In practice, the PE works like this: you book a course, often over several weeks or as an intensive week. At the end, you play a few holes with the pro and take the theory part. Once passed, you get an entry in your Golf ID Card or a corresponding certificate with which you can register at other facilities. Many courses additionally require membership in a recognized association or proof of a Handicap, especially at demanding facilities above a certain level.

A typical misconception: the PE is not a permanent, inviolable right. Anyone who behaves grossly out of line or damages the course can have the playing eligibility withdrawn by the club management. Also popular is the assumption that the PE automatically applies worldwide. Some facilities abroad require a minimum handicap or a membership; pure course attendance is not enough there. Check briefly with your destination club before traveling. The PE is your driving license for the green — as in road traffic, the rule applies: permission yes, consideration still a duty.

FAQ

How do I get the Platzerlaubnis (course permission)?

You book a course with a golf instructor, often over several weeks or as an intensive week, and take a practical and a theoretical test at the end. In it, you show reliable shots from the tee, on the fairway and on the green, plus rules and etiquette knowledge. After passing, you get an entry in your golf ID card, with which you can register at other facilities.

Does my PE also apply at courses abroad?

Not automatically — many facilities abroad require a minimum handicap or membership in a recognized association; pure course attendance is often not enough there. Check briefly with your destination club before traveling to see which credentials it accepts. With a registered handicap, you are almost always on the safe side internationally.

Can the Platzerlaubnis (course permission) be revoked?

Yes, the PE is not an inviolable right for life. Anyone who behaves grossly out of line, endangers other players or willfully damages the course can have the playing eligibility withdrawn by the club management. The permission therefore continues to oblige you to show consideration and know the rules — similar to a driving license in road traffic.
