Tiger Line

The tiger line is the risky direct line to the target that shortcuts across hazards.

The expression goes back to Tiger Woods, who in his best years chose lines other players did not dare: straight over treetops, corners of doglegs or straight through water. The tiger line is therefore the shortest but most dangerous connection between tee and flag. It demands maximum Carry distance and precision, because even a few meters of deviation leave the ball in the hazard or out of bounds. In return it saves half a stroke to a full stroke when it comes off.

In practice the tiger line is a calculation of ability and consequence. For example: dogleg left, the corner is 250 meters away, dense scrub behind it. Your safe Drive flies 230 meters — the tiger line over the corner is simply out of reach. If you play it anyway, the ball ends up in the undergrowth and the hole is effectively lost. A long hitter with 270 meters of carry, on the other hand, can choose the same line and then has only a short iron to the green. The line is not brave or cowardly, but suited or unsuited to your own distance.

A typical mistake is copying without a foundation. Many amateurs play the line of the TV pro with thirty meters less distance and wonder about the vanished ball. The honest alternative is the conservative line to the wide side of the fairway — it rarely costs you more than half a stroke, while a missed tiger line almost always costs more. Plan the target line of every tee shot according to your real distance, not according to wishful thinking.

FAQ

Is the tiger line worth it for me as an amateur?

Only if your real distance and precision allow the shortcut — and that is the case for very few amateurs. The tiger line saves half a stroke to a full stroke when it works but almost always costs more when it fails. Measure your carry distance honestly, not according to wishful thinking, and the question answers itself.

What is the most common mistake when choosing the tiger line?

Copying the line you see from pros on TV — with thirty meters less length. What is a calculated shortcut over the dogleg corner for the pro ends for you in the undergrowth or out of bounds. The line is not brave or cowardly; it is suited or unsuited to your game.

How should I plan my line from the tee instead?

Choose the wide side of the fairway and align the target line with your real distance, not with the shortest connection to the flag. The conservative line rarely costs you more than half a stroke — a missed risk line almost always more. A tee shot in play is the best basis for every par.
