Winter Rules

Winter rules are local rules that allow you to improve the lie of your ball during the cold and wet season.

Winter rules are the answer to mud, wetness and worn patches in winter. Internationally the principle is called "preferred lies". Where they apply, you may mark your ball on closely mown areas such as the Fairway, lift it, clean it and place it again within a fixed distance, without penalty. Common are one club-length or the length of a scorecard, never nearer the hole. In the Rough and in bunkers, the relief normally does not apply. The Preferred Lies thus remains a targeted help for the areas that suffer most in winter.

In practice it looks like this: your ball lies in the middle of the fairway in a muddy patch, the ball is dirty and hard to assess. You mark the position, lift the ball, clean it and place it one club-length away on clean ground, not nearer the flag. Then you carry on playing normally. The whole procedure takes less than twenty seconds and at the same time protects the damaged patch, because you are not hitting out of the mud.

The most common mistake is assuming winter rules apply automatically and everywhere. They only apply if the committee has declared them by notice or in the Local Rules, and only on the designated areas. The second classic: placing the ball nearer the hole or generously extending the permitted distance. Both can cost penalty strokes in competition. And note: with preferred lies the ball is placed, not dropped — this distinguishes the rule from other forms of relief.

FAQ

Do winter rules apply automatically as soon as it gets cold and wet?

No. Improving the lie is only allowed if the committee has expressly declared it by notice or in the local rules. Without such a notice the usual rule applies: play the ball as it lies — otherwise you risk penalty strokes in competition.

How far may I move the ball when improving the lie?

One club-length or the length of a scorecard is common, depending on the notice at your facility. Two limits always apply: never nearer the hole, and the ball is placed, not dropped. Mark the original position before lifting, then there is no dispute.

May I improve the lie of my ball in the rough?

Normally not. The relief almost always applies only on closely mown areas such as the fairway; in the rough and in bunkers the ball stays where it is. Exactly how far the rule extends is written in the notice — if in doubt, ask at the club office before the round.
