Air shot

An air shot is a swing with which you miss the ball completely — and it still counts as a stroke.

The air shot, in English also called a whiff or Air Shot, is the most embarrassing stroke in golf. You swing with full intent, the clubface passes over, under or beside the ball, and the ball stays where it is. The rules are unambiguous here: as soon as you intended to strike the ball, the attempt counts as a stroke. That also applies on the green when your putt misses the ball. A pure practice swing without the intention of striking, by contrast, does not count.

In practice the air shot usually happens for three reasons: you stand too far from the ball, you lift your body in the downswing, or the ball lies so deep in the rough that the club passes right over it. An example: your ball sits in knee-high grass, you swing the wedge through, the grass cushions it, the ball does not move. That is stroke two — or three, depending on what came before. On the scorecard there is no mercy for it; every air shot is a full stroke.

A typical beginner mistake is immediately repeating it with more force. Whoever misses the first attempt usually swings the second even more frantically and misses again. Better is a short pause: check your distance to the ball, set up your stance again, and make a calm swing with your eyes on the ball. Honestly counted, the air shot belongs to the score — like any other stroke.

FAQ

Does an air shot count as a stroke?

Yes, the rules are unambiguous here: as soon as you intended to strike the ball, the attempt counts as a full stroke. That also applies on the green when your putt misses the ball. A practice swing without the intention of striking does not count.

What should I do after missing the ball?

Do not immediately repeat it with more force — that is the typical beginner mistake that produces the second air shot. Take a short pause, check your distance to the ball and set up your stance again. Then a calm swing with your eyes firmly on the ball.

Why do I keep missing the ball completely?

The three most common causes are: you stand too far from the ball, you lift your body in the downswing, or the ball lies so deep in the rough that the club passes right over it. Check distance and stance height first before doubting your swing technique.
