Monthly Cup

The Monthly Cup is a regular club tournament, usually held once a month.

The Monthly Cup is part of the fixed rhythm of almost every golf club in Germany. It is a competition over 18 holes, open to all members with a course certificate or a handicap. It is mostly played as Stableford or stroke play, scored gross and net in various classes. The name comes from the classic prize for winning: a challenge trophy or cup that the winner keeps until the next edition. Today there are often non-cash prizes; the name has stayed.

For you, the Monthly Cup is the easiest entry into tournament golf. An example: you sign up at the club office or online, get your tee time and play in a group with two other members. Your round counts for handicap purposes, which means a good result improves your handicap. After the round there is a small prize-giving, often at the 19th Hole. This way you quickly get to know other members and get a feel for competition, without immediately jumping into a big tournament.

A typical misconception: the Monthly Cup is not an elite tournament. Many newcomers do not dare to sign up because they feel too weak. Yet the net competition is regularly won by someone with a mid-range handicap who plays above their level on that day. The assumption that you have to play perfectly puts many off too. In the Stableford format, a Bogey on most holes is enough for points. Anyone who plays regularly improves their handicap and their nerve as a side effect.

FAQ

How do I sign up for a Monthly Cup for the first time?

Registration usually runs through the club office or your club's online tee time system, often up to a few days before the date. You need an active handicap or at least a course certificate; then you are given your tee time and your group. Show up about half an hour early on tournament day so you can collect your scorecard and start information in peace.

Can I improve my handicap at the Monthly Cup?

Yes, because Monthly Cup rounds usually count for handicap purposes. If you play below your handicap, your handicap goes down; if you play worse, it goes up only in small steps or stays stable thanks to the buffer zone. That is exactly why playing regularly is worthwhile: you collect tournament experience and work on your playing strength at the same time.

What is the difference between winning gross and winning net at the Monthly Cup?

For a gross win, only the raw stroke count matters — here the lowest handicaps almost always win. In the net competition your handicap is deducted, so anyone with an above-average performance on the day can win. For beginners, the net class is therefore the realistic and motivating competition.
