Shag Bag

A shag bag is a bag with a built-in pickup device for collecting and carrying practice balls.

The shag bag is pure practice equipment and has no place on the course. Its core is a tube with a mechanism at the lower end: you press the tube down onto the ball lying there, and it slides inside without you having to bend down. At the top sits the bag in which the balls land, plus a handle or carry strap. Coaches, pros and diligent practisers use it because it turns collecting fifty or more balls into a one-minute job. At the edge of the driving range or the practice greens, it is a familiar sight.

In practice, the shag bag pays off wherever you work with many of your own balls. One example: you are practising chips from twenty metres onto a practice green and have thirty balls with you. Instead of picking up every ball individually after each series, you walk across the green once with the shag bag and have everything back together. It also saves you the constant bending when putting with a dozen balls, which wears on your back over time.

A typical misconception: the shag bag is not a status symbol and not mandatory equipment. Anyone who only occasionally putts ten balls does not need one. It only pays off once collecting eats up more time than the practising itself. It should not be confused with the bag for your clubs: the shag bag carries balls only and stays at practice, never in the bag during a round.

FAQ

Do I need a shag bag as a recreational golfer?

Only if you regularly practise with many of your own balls, such as chipping onto a practice green or putting with a dozen balls. Anyone who occasionally putts ten balls collects them faster by hand. The shag bag only pays off once collecting eats up more time than the practising itself.

Can I take the shag bag onto the golf course too?

No, the shag bag is pure practice equipment for the driving range and practice greens. In a round you have only a few balls with you anyway, and an extra pickup bag does not belong in your gear. It stays at practice and never replaces the normal bag.

How does collecting with the shag bag work in concrete terms?

You press the tube at its lower end directly onto the ball lying there, a mechanism lets it slide in, and it lands in the bag at the top. This is how you collect thirty or fifty balls without bending down a single time. It protects your back and turns the most tedious part of practice into a one-minute job.
