Skins Game

A skins game is a competition format in which each hole has its own value and the best player on that hole wins this "skin".

The principle is simple: before the round, the group agrees on a stake or point value per hole. Whoever wins a hole outright with the fewest strokes pockets the skin. If two or more players tie for the best result, the hole does not lapse; instead, the value carries over to the next hole — the pot grows. A single hole can therefore end up being worth several skins, which keeps the tension high right to the last hole. The format works gross, net or with a handicap allowance included per hole.

In practice, the skins game is the most popular side bet in a private round. One example: four friends play for one euro per skin, net with hole handicaps. On the first five holes there are always two tied for the best score, so the pot stands at six euros. On hole 6, one player holes the long birdie putt and sweeps the lot — suddenly the round is open again. What matters is a clear agreement beforehand: gross or net, a maximum on carry-overs, and what happens if the last hole is tied.

A typical misconception: the skins game is not an official competition format with handicap relevance, but a bit of fun on the side. Your result does not count towards your handicap unless you also play a handicap-counting round alongside. The TV variant, in which professionals play for large sums of money per hole, is also well known — but it is irrelevant for club life. Anyone who wants to know more about side bets will find background under the term side bet and under the classic match play, from which the skins game conceptually descends.

FAQ

What happens in a skins game when two players tie on a hole?

The skin does not lapse; instead, it carries over as a so-called carry-over to the next hole — the pot grows. A single hole late in the round can therefore be worth several skins, which keeps the tension high. Clarify before the round whether there is a cap on carry-overs and what happens if the last hole is tied.

Should we play the skins game gross or net?

In mixed groups, net with hole handicaps is the fair choice, because otherwise the best player sweeps nearly everything. To do this, you allocate the handicap strokes according to the difficulty of the holes, as marked on the scorecard. Gross is only worthwhile if everyone is at a similar level.

Does a skins game count towards my handicap?

No, the skins game is a side bet and is not in itself handicap-counting. If you play a rules-compliant round in parallel and enter the scores properly, that round can still count towards your handicap. The rules and the bet therefore run separately from each other.
